Cupcake Level: Nintendo-Senpai Noticed Us!

Don't you just love the Pokémon Sun and Moon games and anime? I certainly do! :D I have been a huge fan of the Pokémon series since 1999 - that's when the first games came out in Europe - but to me, it is also a very big relief to see that finally some interesting changes were made to the franchise! Don't get me wrong, the concept of Pokémon never gets old, but the new games have such a captivating storyline, are way less predictable (No more gyms, but surprisingly funny and challenging fights against Totem Pokémon and Island Kahunas instead), and offer some much-needed improvements over long-established, outdated gameplay elements, such as those pesky Hidden Machines that used to take up all of your Pokémons' move slots. Blegh, evil Hidden Machines.

Along with the Sun and Moon games and anime, a bunch of new Pokémon were introduced, and some of the old Pokémon were given a "regional variant" or Alolan form. So, of course, I had to invite my good old cupcake team over to my house in order to consume a lifelong supply of snacks and cookies, enjoy hot chocolate with marshmallows, and design and create another colourful series of Pokémon-themed cupcakes! Eva, Lisa, and I made Pokémon Sun and Moon cupcakes, including some of the new Alolan forms, while Sam decided to do his own thing. ;) His loss, because - believe it or not - Nintendo Belgium somehow discovered our cupcakes on Facebook, and shared them on their Instagram account! :D Well, most of them. Not Sam's cupcakes, of course. That's what you get for being stubborn, Sam! In any case, this is probably the highlight of our cupcake career. *Takes a bow*

I'm looking forward to our next cupcake adventures. :D And if all goes wrong in life, my friends and I will open a cupcake store, I swear.

Bye, guys!

Oh Christmas Tree, Your Ornaments Are History

Merry Christmas, guys! May this Christmas bring you all the love and friendship in the world! :) Don't forget to stuff your faces with delicious food!

2016 has almost come to an end. So much talent has been taken from us this year (Alan Rickman! David Bowie! Carrie Fisher! Please come back, and we will give you Donald Trump in return!), racism is omnipresent within our society, and the terrorist attacks have been hitting very close to home, but I still think that 2016 was one of my favourite years so far. Living together with my boyfriend makes me incredibly happy. I made a bunch of new friends, and my old friendship bonds are stronger than ever before, with many of my best friends making life-changing decisions, and allowing me to support them from the sidelines. I finished a lot of challenging projects, and I am starting to feel more satisfied with my own art style and work. And then there's my PhD thesis, which is... a work in progress! Well, I really can't complain. :)

Before I forget, here's this year's Christmas illustration! From me, to you, and to anyone who can relate to this. Because cats and Christmas trees will always be a very dangerous combo.

Happy holidays!

White Mage in Progress

Hi, foxies! I am very excited about one of my latest projects, so please allow me to tell you all about it. :) I am currently working on my very first Worbla cosplay weapon, a Thyrus relic weapon from the online game Final Fantasy XIV. I have to admit that I have been dreaming of crafting my own cosplay props for quite a while now, but to be honest, I really had no idea where to start. You know, these weapons look so real, and I don't exactly have an armour smithy in my backyard. Well, turns out you don't even need that!

Last July, I decided to sign up for a Worbla workshop in Antwerp. Our host was no one less than Mistvein (Robbe), a surprisingly young cosplayer who has already won tons of national cosplay awards. The workshop took place at a traditional glassworks atelier, where Mistvein's assistant Cookiepie (Tim) creates the most beautiful glass art pieces. Believe me, these two guys are amazingly talented, so please give their fan pages a well-deserved like! :D I learned so many things at the workshop and I am very grateful to Robbe and Tim.

Worbla is a brand of non-toxic thermoplastics. It can be shaped by hand and it is self-adhesive when heated - basically, all you need is a regular heating gun. It can be painted with just about any paint. The most difficult part of crafting cosplay armour and weapons is carefully cutting the EVA foam before applying the Worbla, but once you get used to it, it's not that hard at all.

In fact, you just need a lot of patience. I made this Worbla weapon at home in about 20 hours time (four sessions to cut the foam and heat the Worbla, and one more session to apply the white primer). I am currently painting the weapon with acrylic paint, and I can't be happier with the result. I really look forward to finishing the Thyrus and wearing my White Mage cosplay at the FFXIV Fan Fest in February!

See you next time!

Why Scientific Posters Are Dangerous For Me: A Brief Essay

Hi, guys! I completely forgot that I really wanted to share something slightly more scientific with you. Put on your nerd glasses and see what happens when you ask me to give a scientific poster presentation at a conference workshop (*SEM at ACL) in Berlin. You might already know that I really enjoy designing scientific posters for Academia (Read all about it here and here!), but it looks like things are getting a tiny bit out of hand now. My latest poster looks like a fricking coffee table. It has an apple, a cup of coffee, a notebook, a magnifying glass, and some Post-It notes. Oh, and the results of my research are on there somewhere, as well.

To be honest, I can't stop laughing when I think back of the moment when I put up this A0-sized poster during one of the conference's coffee breaks at the Humboldt University. I grabbed a cup of tea and watched my poster from afar, only to see conference delegates flocking to the poster. Some people even started making pictures! And while I actually wasn't supposed to give my poster presentation until the next coffee break, I simply had to approach the secret admirers and ask them if they wanted to talk about my research. I stood there for almost three hours and it was my best poster presentation experience so far. The feedback was amazing! You see, I really take my job and research very seriously, but I guess it doesn't hurt to bring some colour to our world. :)

See you around~!

I'm Silently Correcting You're, Errrm, Your Grammar

Wow, did anybody say "update"? ... Okay, I guess nobody said that. But I still have some catching up to do, so here you go! :) I'm afraid I cannot show you my latest children's book illustrations just yet - however, there's still some stuff I need to upload here.

If you're a frequent visitor of my blog, you might know that I have been working closely together with my favourite coffee bar in town (No, I'm not only saying that because we're teaming up!): Le Mustache in Leuven! If you're not a frequent visitor of my blog, you should really get your lazy butt to Le Mustache, order a Hippolatte, and then we'll talk again.

Anyway! At the beginning of KU Leuven's academic year, it is always important for shops and bars in Leuven to attract brand-new customers (Read: young, innocent students). Last year, Le Mustache and I joined forces to create two cartoon ads: one for Groep T, and one for the faculty of Psychology. The illustrations were very well received, so I got to make a new one this year. :D In fact, this time, the cartoon was addressed at students from the Arts faculty - and that's my faculty! I couldn't help but make fun of the erroneous spelling and grammatical gender of La Moustache: we are language students, after all. And in case you were wondering, Le Mustache's spelling is obviously a silly joke! :)

I hope you like it!

Falling Leaves, Pumpkins, and Inktober

Hi, guys! Have you ever heard of the Inktober challenge? Inktober was created in 2009 by mister Jake Parker as a challenge to develop positive drawing habits. Now, it's a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year. Inktober consists of 31 themes, one for each day of the month.

My friend Xavier, who is usually not that much into drawing but did find the courage to accept the challenge, asked me to join him in tackling the 31 Inktober tasks. Well... To be quite honest, I started much too late (I think it was October 14 when I made my first sketch), and I'm not even sure if I'll ever finish this project. However, it would be silly not to share my first doodles with you, because some of the themes somehow forced me to think outside of my comfort zone. :) I think the illustrations are rather funny and cute, and I hope you like them too.

See you next time!

The Princess and the Knight

Hey, buddies! It's about time to post some new updates, don't you think? I haven't had much time to share my latest creations with you, but rest assured! Art and cosplay are currently taking up all of my spare time, and that's exactly the way it should be. :3 While most of the recent Katwalk artwork is - unfortunately - top secret material, I still have a lot of other creative stuff to share with you, so don't run away just yet!

About two months ago, I got an email from a Flemish girl named Sara. She is currently engaged to a very sweet boy called Bruno, who recently became a policeman. In order to congratulate her hubby-to-be on his new position, Sara sent me the following art request. She asked for a Disney-style drawing of Bruno (wearing his cool, new uniform, obviously) and herself (wearing a wedding dress). The caption of the illustration says "Liefde is... elkaars dromen waarmaken" ("Love is... to make each other's dreams come true") - first of all, because joining the police corps was Bruno's biggest wish and Sara supported him in every possible way to make his dream become a reality, and secondly, because Sara wanted to marry him and Bruno proposed to her. Aww!

On a side note, do you remember that Undertale drawing from a few weeks ago? A big Facebook page called The Undertale Fandom shared it with their followers, and it received more than 300 likes! That's a personal record, for sure. :)

Stay tuned, more updates are following very soon!

A Tribute To Undertale

Hey, guys. I'm afraid I have become one of them. You know, an Undertale fangirl. I played the game three months ago and, needless to say, I had a heavy-hearted and lonely feeling after watching the credits (Music by Toby Fox, characters by Toby Fox, WHOLE FRICKING GAME by Toby Fox. Fabled Fox loves Toby Fox). Finishing Undertale is like finishing a really great book: for a second, you don't know what to do with your life anymore...

That is, until you discover the fanbase. Thank God for the Undertale fanbase! There's art, stories, comics, and Facebook pages. Undertale proves that you don't need fancy graphics, 50 hours of gameplay, or the help of famous voice actors to win the hearts of the masses. The Undertale universe goes well beyond our wildest imaginations, inspiring thousands of gamers to get creative and make the black-and-white 2D characters come to life.

So, here it is, my own tribute to one of the greatest RPGs of all time! It took me about 17 hours to finish, but I really enjoyed every bit of it. From top to bottom, left to right, you may recognise the following characters: Flowey, Muffet, Napstablook, Asgore, Alphys, Undyne, Mettaton, Toriel, Asriel, Papyrus, Sans, Frisk, and Temmie. I also put in a little hot dog and spaghetti reference. :) I'm really proud of this drawing, and I don't say that often. I hope you like it.

I completely forgot to update this blog, so I will be uploading more drawings soon! :)

Exit June, Enter July

Hello, guys! I haven't posted in a while, but I'm still alive. In fact, I have made several drawings over the past few weeks, and I have discovered a brand-new way of sharing my art with the outside world: live streams! I have hosted a number of creative sessions on Twitch - make sure you follow me, so you will receive email updates as soon as I go live again. :) I have to admit, it's so much fun to have a chat with random visitors. The community is really awesome, but I'm also very grateful that my friends regularly stop by to have a look at the drawing and talk with me.

So, what exactly have I been doing? Last time, I told you about a new children's book project. I would like to share my first three drawings with you, although I am not sure if I will post any other Katwalk-related drawings in the near future. I'm scared that, in the end, nobody will buy the book! Although the story will be worth it, I promise. ;) The forth drawing is a Generation 7 Pokémon illustration. The hype is real! Everybody is currently playing Pokémon Go by downloading the APK file illegally, and here I am, waiting for the official launch. So I have been drawing some Pokes instead. Like the good girl I am. *Sigh, I reaaally want to play that game!*

Take care, everyone! See you on Twitch, maybe?

A New Beginning

Hi, guys! In one of my first blog posts, I showed you some of my illustrations for the Dromeria stories. Dromeria: Biggie and Dromeria: Lode were written by the Flemish author Marc Geyens. As you might know, I am not a professional artist. I work at a university and I just like to relax during the weekends with a big cup of tea and a nice piece of (digital) paper. Finishing two children's books was a pretty big accomplishment for me, as I don't really have a lot of spare time, but these projects also helped me grow as an artist and they gave me the motivation to continuously keep practicing my skills. Then again, I was not bound to any deadlines or schedules. Which is also a very good thing.

Lately, I have been thinking about working on a new children's book. In fact, my mother and I always used to say that we would release a children's book together, long before I actually illustrated my first one. And with all these great story ideas flowing through our brains, I think it is about time to make this a reality: my mom will write the story, and I will take care of the drawings! I already made a number of illustrations of some of our characters and I think these guys have a lot of potential. :D I'm curious to see where this project will bring us, but I certainly won't give up!

See you soon!

Doodles Of May

Hello, guys! I just came back from a meeting in Madrid and I am already preparing for my next conference in Slovenia. To be quite honest, it's not really the best time ever to work on time-consuming digital projects, so I decided to just sit down with my sketchbook on my lap while watching American reality shows on MTV. Even though I lost a good amount of brain cells while staring at my television screen, I did manage to finish five new doodles, using nothing but a ballpoint pen! :) As you can see, I am very excited about the new starter Pokémon. My favourite new Poke is Litten, but I think the other designs look very promising, as well. What Pokémon will you start your adventure with?

See you soon!

What If Disney Animals Were Real People?

Lately, artists have been re-imagining Disney characters in many, MANY different ways. Think of Disney princesses who have been turned into handsome men, classic characters wearing today's fashion, an endless number of My Little Pony counterparts,... Well, I guess I've seen them all! :) Recently, my friend Eva showed me a series of drawings in which a number of Disney animals had been transformed into their humanized form. Oh my Bolt that is the best idea ever.

In this drawing, I show you my own attempt at humanizing the following characters: Marie (The Aristocats), Tumper (Bambi), Mushu (Mulan), Shenzi (The Lion King), Scar (The Lion King), and Pumbaa (The Lion King).

I did not use any references, except for the original Disney characters. My goal was to highlight some of the characters' key features, such as their hairstyle and body language. To be honest, I think that using colours would make them more easily recognizable. Think of red hair for Mushu and Pumbaa, grey and beige accents for Thumper, or Marie's pink ribbons. My personal favourite ones are Pumbaa and Mushu! They look so unique. :D What do you think?

See you!

Disney Doodles, Part Two

Hi, guys! As you may already know, I am currently in the process of drawing my favourite cartoon and anime characters... which is, basically, a never-ending project that will keep me busy for quite a while. ;) Since I really enjoyed creating last week's Disney doodles, I have decided to draw some more Disney characters this weekend. What have we got today?
  • First of all, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde from Zootopia. Unfortunately, I have not seen the movie yet - so it might indeed be a bit weird to say that they are my favourite cartoon characters. :) However, these guys look so awesome, I could simply not resist drawing them.
  • Next up, Wreck-it-Ralph's adorable Vanellope von Schweetz, the ruler of the arcade game "Sugar Rush", before she was turned into a game-destroying glitch. Guys, you know how much I love Artificial Intelligence! Especially if they have delicious candy in their hair, omnomnom.
  • Another very recent Disney movie that I've enjoyed was Inside Out, which tells the story of five anthropomorphic emotions inside a young girl's head. The complex relation between Joy and Sadness is easily one of the cutest and most original storylines I've seen in a long while.
  • Finally, a golden oldie: Timon from The Lion King. After all these years, Timon is still as charming as ever. Hakuna Matata!
I can't wait to draw the next batch of characters. See you soon!

The Fan Art Project

Hey, guys! It has been a while. March has been a great, yet incredibly busy month. Our research group won an award for the Picto engine, and I have been stuck in Barcelona with Niels for almost one whole week. Well, of course, there are worse places to be stuck at. ;) Hola, where's my sangría?

Another important reason why I haven't been drawing much lately, is because I don't really have any interesting projects to work on. That's why I have decided to create a series of cute drawings featuring my favourite characters. And here's the first batch! As you can see, this one is Disney-themed (Guys, that's my very first Baymax right there! He's actually too easy to draw lolol), but I'm also looking forward to creating Pokémon sets, Harry Potter sets, Final Fantasy sets, etcetera. Heck, I have SO many favourite characters! The life of a fangirl is so tough. I guess this project will keep me busy for a little while. Do you have any favourite Disney characters?

See you next time!

Pokédoodles

2016 is a very special year for geeks who simply refuse to grow up! The first Pokémon games, Red & Blue (or Green in Japan) were released exactly 20 years ago. It's weird to think that this franchise is still alive and kicking. And while we, veterans, might not be too crazy about the newest generations of Pokémon, the television episodes are still a big hit amongst Belgian children. A few months ago, I was wearing a custom-made Pokémon bag during my "Draw With the Flow" workshop and two kids instantly recognized Fennekin, one of the more recent starter Pokémon. When I told them that my friends have been very big fans of the series for over 15 years and that we still like to play the Pokémon games, they were really surprised! SO. CUTE.

About one week ago, Nintendo released Pokémon Red and Blue in the 3DS eShop. I grabbed the Blue version for 10 euros. It is just wonderful to see that the game is still as charming as ever. The graphics might be very outdated, but the gameplay formula never gets old. In fact, the formula has never changed. So, here is my modest tribute to the old games: six Pokémon doodles. Drawn with my Eevee pencil, under the supervision of Raichu and Leafeon, two of my favourite Pokémon! I can't wait for another 20 amazing years.

See you soon!

Seeker of the Sun

Hey, guys! I have decided that I need to step up my game a little bit. Digital paintings, especially portraits, always seemed to scare the heck out of me. :') They're incredibly time-consuming and I don't feel like I am patient enough to study the human body. Because anatomy. Sucks. Big time. And while I certainly enjoy creating Disney-like characters with thick, black outlines and flat, happy colours (AKA the infamous lazy-ass method), I really wanted to try something different for once. Maybe for twice, who knows.

So, there we are, my first real digital portrait! This drawing took me about 12 hours to finish, so I would highly recommend checking out the full-size picture. :) The cat-eared woman depicted below is Y'shtola, one of Final Fantasy XIV's main characters. She's a "Seeker of the Sun" Miqo'te (kitteh), one of the six different races in the game, and she possesses the ability to cast powerful healing spells with her branch-shaped wand. Yes, you guys, that's a wand.

This drawing might not be perfect, heck no, but I have learned so many things this time! For instance, I ended up adding pink, yellow, and blue highlights, making the character look less detached from the background. The white highlights give the image more depth, and adding the loose hair strands made her haircut look less boring. I really think I should try this again sometime. What do you think?

Bye-bye!

Welcome, Little Nami!

Big news, guys! My friend Valérie, who also happens to be my gaming buddy Bart's girlfriend, gave birth to a lovely baby girl! I am quite surprised that I actually managed to shut up about the baby's name or gender for over three months. :P The reason why Val and Bart had entrusted me with these secrets, was because they asked me to design their baby card. That's right, I made my VERY FIRST baby card! I am so proud/happy/honored/emotional/insert more adjectives here. Val had a lot of cool ideas and I did my very best to make all her wishes come true. The card is Hawaii-themed and features the family's dog, cats, and rabbits. You might notice that we tried to recreate the Lilo & Stitch look and feel. The back of the card was Bart's idea. I think it's the cutest thing ever.

Nami is a healthy baby girl. It will be really cool to see her grow up. I hope she will become a gamer, just like her daddy! ;)

I'm working on a pretty challenging digital piece right now. Things are looking quite good so far, but I'll need some more time to finish it. See you soon!

We Came, We Saw, We Made Cupcakes

I love traditions, especially if they involve good friends and delicious cupcakes! Pieter-Jan, Eva, and Sam came over to my home to practice their cupcake skills. Our designs are starting to look very professional and we are actually starting to reduce the total amount of toothpicks that we need to keep everything nicely together. ;) The first row in the big collage below are my cupcakes, the second row are Pieter-Jan's, the third row are Eva's, and the last row are Sam's. We have been inspired by Studio Ghibli (Totoro, Ponyo, Princess Kaguya), Disney (Olaf, Sadness, Meeko, BB-8), and Pokémon (Mesprit, Flareon, Gourgeist). You might also spot Toothless, a beautiful rose, the Cat King, and Monokuma!

I would love to design cartoon cupcakes next time. I'm thinking of Steven Universe, the Powerpuff Girls, and Fairly Odd Parents. Do you have any good suggestions for me?

See you soon!

This Girl Is On Fire

Aaah, I've so looked forward to this: the one and only ACA IT Solutions New Year party at Theodrôme! This year's theme was Soirée Rouge (Red Evening), and knowing that Niels' colleagues never hold back when it comes to dressing up, we really had to come up with something original. Niels dressed up as a can of Coke. Among the other guests were the Flash, a beautiful ladybug, a red traffic light, the Queen of Hearts, and Waldo. The food was delicious and Theadrôme treated us with a really cool burlesque show. The location was just perfect.

I wanted to create a cosplay outfit that I could also wear at a convention, especially since Made in Asia is coming up pretty soon. I decided to go with Flareon, one of the original 151 Pokémon. My mom and I went shopping for fabric, and it's thanks to her that this outfit came into existence! The ears were a huge challenge, as they were initially too big and fell down (Sad Flareon would also be a sweet cosplay idea, but it's not exactly what I had in mind). The tail and other yellow accents were also hand-made. I did the make-up all by myself (It's simple, but I'm incredibly proud of it), although I could not have done it without my friends' advice. :D I hope you like it!

All Grown Up

Hello, guys! Some of you might actually remember this drawing (and if you don't, you obviously need to visit my blog more often!). I made the pencil sketch a few weeks ago. This was my friend Elisa's request for Fabled Fox for Life, my creative fundraiser for the WAI-NOT website. Elisa came up with this lovely idea of drawing the Aristocats as fancy miladies and milords and I had SO much fun with it, that I eventually decided to make a digital painting, as well.

My new Wacom tablet is lovely, by the way. It is so light and it's even more pressure-sensitive than the Bamboo! I will continue to practice my digital painting skills. Digital brushes are so much fun, I can't believe I didn't try them out earlier. :)

Farewell, Professor Snape

Sad news. Alan Rickman passed away at the age of 69. We will remember him as the man who portrayed professor Snape in the Harry Potter movies. I read the first Harry Potter books before The Philosopher's Stone came out in theatres, and I instantly disliked some of the actors because they differed so much from the mental images that I had constructed. However, Alan Rickman was the perfect Snape. He gave Snape a voice and a body language that I couldn't have imagined myself. I was very shocked to hear that Rickman died. Maybe I thought he was immortal. The first thing I did after hearing the news, was grabbing a ballpoint pen and a piece of scrap paper. I made this sketch to say farewell to one of the greatest British actors of our time.

By the way, if you speak Dutch, feel free to have a look at my brand-new videogame blog Prinses Perzik (Princess Peach)! There will be new updates every 2-3 days. See you there!

The Four Seasons Of Le Mustache

So, I guess this little project has finally come to an end! My Winter paintings for Le Mustache have been printed on canvas and are currently decorating the walls of the best coffee bar in town. I am really grateful that Mutlu and Annelore gave me this opportunity and I really look forward to our next collaboration. By the way, the snow is a lie. We won't be seeing any snow this Winter, but I actually prefer it that way. ;)
